About this meeting
*Please make sure to message the gruop practitioner upon registering* Rooted in Strength is a culturally responsive peer support group created to provide Black individuals with a safe, affirming environment to build community, process lived experiences, and strengthen emotional wellness. This group recognizes that many Black individuals navigate unique social and cultural stressors, including racialized trauma, chronic stress, community expectations, and the emotional labor of adapting identity presentation across different environments. The group focuses on strengthening coping skills, emotional regulation, interpersonal support, and help-seeking behaviors. Participants are invited to discuss challenges related to recovery, mental health, family dynamics, identity, and belonging while learning practical strategies for self-care, communication, boundary setting, and community building. Sessions are designed to normalize vulnerability, encourage mutual support, and reinforce that seeking help is an active strength-based behavior rather than a sign of weakness. This group also creates space to discuss barriers that may impact engagement in mental health or recovery support, including mistrust of systems, underrepresentation in care settings, and stigma surrounding mental health treatment in some communities. Discussions are approached with nuance and respect, acknowledging that attitudes toward emotional expression and professional support can be shaped by historical, cultural, and intergenerational experiences. The goal of Rooted & Rising is to increase connection, reduce isolation, and support participants in developing sustainable wellness practices within a culturally affirming environment.

About the host
I'm an African American, non-binary person living in Northern Colorado with my partner of 7 years and our 8 pets (and probably counting). I love interacting with others as well as balancing that with my personal self-care time. My self-care generally consists of gardening, creative writing, and doing anything related to Pokémon. Humor and music are big parts of my life and have helped me get through a lot. I play 6 instruments and I love to cook. Feel free to ask me more about myself!
Motivation for help
I've had a strong desire to work in the mental health and substance abuse field from my late teens-early twenties where I had the experience of meeting a child who was mentally and emotionally hurting. It helped me to build the desire to help those who are experiencing/reliving trauma and are being misunderstood. Over the years, I found that I can do more to help as a Peer Specialis/Coach because there is so much more that can be gained from the addition of someone who can attest to having similar experiences in the care team of those who are experiencing mental heath or substance abuse struggles. My desire to help people feel less alone and to help others live the lives they see themselves living is what motivates me to help from a Peer Support position.
