About Alex

I’ve lived with medication-resistant Major Depressive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder and ADHD for most of my life. A lifelong resident of Oregon, I’ve worked many different jobs including tech and retail. I’ve also dealt with substance addiction and have gratefully found the means to move past it. I find satisfaction in my day to day through acts of service, moments of kindness, and being present for others. Ask me how I'm working to connect peers with each other. :)

My Recovery Story

My recovery in the past has been a matter of ownership. I’ve let myself shed a lot, become more vulnerable, self-aware. I’ve agonized and repeated. But today I own my past actions and look to build upon them. My quality of life is really just mine. It’s more solitary than it used to be, and it tends to involve less social opportunities. I still struggle to pay my bills and to keep a roof over my head. But the difference between the past me and the present me is that I ruminate less on hypotheticals and spend more time focusing my willpower in the moment to moment, and that has had an embracing effect on me. I’m proud of who I am, despite the path I’ve walked. I have a unique view of the mountain.

My Motivation To Help

I’ve had various crisis points in my life that I’ve tried to resolve using our healthcare system—through individual counseling, medications, outpatient groups, and at one point a voluntary inpatient. And while these moments have occurred throughout my past life, I recognize now that my recovery through them may have unfolded quite differently had I been given other opportunities to heal. I see Peer Support as that opportunity for others, as it’s been one for me through NorthStar. My experience with mental health, with all the avenues I’ve taken trying to address it—it’s left me the person that I am today. I am someone who can relate and connect, and I’m eager for it.
