About Danielle

Hi, Danny here. I'm a proud Philly native who has been on what I would call an adventure over the past two decades. That's when I first touched down in Los Angeles. I decided to move to Los Angeles 20 years ago, because my big sister came here to go to school and stayed here to start her life. She'd always been my best friend (oftentimes felt like my only friend), and as I've tried to explain to folks for ages, I tend to move to faces, not places. Having someone I love and trust somewhere trumps the weather, the vibe, or the potential commute. If there is a face there that will light up when they see me, that will be there when I'm finding it difficult to be seen, that's the place for me. Throughout my time here, I've navigated the challenges of living with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, and after many ups and downs, I've come to appreciate the knowledge I've acquired and the coping skills I've learned. I'd learned resilience and gained a unique perspective on mental health—my own and in general. Now, I get to engage in peer work for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), where I am fortunate to support others who are on their own journeys to understanding and managing their mental health challenges. And all of us can use some company along the way, maybe an anecdote or two, or a tip based on how someone else found there way. Outside of my peer work, I also have a passion for animals and share my home with just the right number of furry companions—five cats and two dogs—my own little ecosystem, my little family that borders on the brink of chaos, but strikes just the right balance of everything I need and want. And what is family if not a lovely bucket of chaos? I've found my tribe and built my family into something even greater since discovering the world of peer support. It brings joy and warmth to my day-to-day life that makes everything worth it.

My Recovery Story

Once I finally realized that actively caring for oneself when suffering from mental illness is just as much a recovery as when doing it for addiction, everything changed. I was able to identify my needs and then approach them in a far more systematic, practical way. It changed everything.

My Motivation To Help

For most of my life, I felt isolated from the world until I found a peer class. Then I heard the three most beautiful words: "People like us." Another person said it, and I realized I was included in that. I'd found my tribe—one I never actually believed existed.end to
