A peer counselor is a meaningful way to support others by sharing lived experiences, encouragement, and understanding. I chose this role because I want to give back, create hope, and show that recovery and growth are possible. Peer counseling is not only about listening and guiding—it’s about building trust, fostering resilience, and empowering others on their personal journey.

About Joanna

Hello my name is Joanna. I have been a peer since 2014 in the field of mental health and chemical dependency I have been in the social service field a total of 26 years. Working in Evaluation and Treatment facilities and working in community outreach one on one with individuals, a support counselor for intellectually disabled living in their own homes. I currently work in a behavioral health hospital. I have a bachelor's degree in sociology. I am WRAP certified to facilitate groups and support people individually putting together WRAP plans. I am a very open-minded person with numerous avenues to support individual journeys.

My Recovery Story

"My recovery has been a journey of learning to understand myself and embrace my worth. Living with ADHD, PTSD, and depression brought many challenges, but through support, self-discovery, and resilience, I’ve learned healthier ways to cope and thrive. Today, my quality of life has improved greatly—I have a stronger sense of balance, purpose, and confidence in navigating challenges. Recovery has given me not only hope for myself but also the ability to share that hope with others, reminding them that healing and growth are possible."

My Motivation To Help

"I became a peer counselor because I believe in the power of shared experience to bring hope and healing. By offering understanding, encouragement, and support, I can walk alongside others in their journey—showing that recovery is possible and that no one has to go through it alone."
