DetailsAbout Aspensong
I am a disabled trans Two-Spirit Peer Support Specialist with chronic pain, Autism, OCD, MDD, and cPTSD. I also have experience dealing with abusive relationships and sexual assault. I am passionate about working with marginalized communities such as BIPOC and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
My Recovery Story
While I manage my mental health, and my autism, and chronic pain, there are also systemic issues of oppression that have contributed to my breakdowns and housing insecurity: discrimination and aggressions for being Indigenous, being trans, being disabled. My own experiences have really informed my work in anti-oppression activism, which I have been involved with since I was a teenager. I consider it my personal responsibility to continually educate myself on how I might better support my own communities as well as other marginalized groups. No one thing resulted in a turning point in my recovery. It has been an accumulation of many different things, including leaning on friends, medication changes, environmental changes, ongoing intense work involving meditation, journaling, learning to listen to my limits and take things off my plate, community resources in navigating the mental health and healthcare system. As I have had many turning points, I believe that I will continue to experience them on this ongoing journey. I feel blessed in that I am living out some of my dreams at the moment, including my dreams as a writer and artist. This has been a process that has required a lot of creative commitment, work, and above all courage. For a long time now I feel that I have been able to appreciate how difficult life can be for those of us that are marginalized. This knowledge has definitely been a part of why I have worked so hard to incorporate the arts into my everyday life. Something that has remained steady, regardless of my capacity has been my desire to be in solidarity with my Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer community, and to do all that I can to be someone who uplifts and supports all of us that are dealing with hardship, with a special focus on those of us dealing with structural oppression. Training to be a Peer Support Specialist has felt like coming full circle with what is ultimately most important to me. I consider the truest and most beautiful form of solidarity to be that of mutual aid, and I have learned so much from others dealing with struggles that may not always reflect mine, but share the same foundations, and I hope that I have and will continue to do the same for others.
My Motivation To Help
I have navigated the soul-crushing medical system for many years, wishing I had someone who could meet me on my level. Then I discovered Peer Support work and wanted to give back, especially to multiply-marginalized folx such as fellow disabled, neurodivergent, trans BIPOC.
