About the host
I am an immigrant to the United States. I have worked as a fire fighter/first responder, and a US ARMY Infantryman, until a severe injury from a roadside bomb blast in Iraq. I've struggled with intravenous opiate addiction that led to lengthy jail sentence and I have attempted suicide several times. Once I decided to try and get well, I utilized the GI Bill to earn a Bachelors degree in Psychology emphasizing in substance abuse counseling, then became a certified peer specialist. I have worked for veteran non-profits, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, SMART recovery facilitation and several other wellness centers providing support to those who have struggled with similar afflictions. I've been doing peer support of some kind for 5 years and I know how much it helped me. I know what it is like to wake up every day feeling nothing but hopelessness and despair. Today I live in line with my values, and I am proud of the person I have become. It is an honor and a pleasure to support those who currently do not have hope in their lives.
Motivation for help
I believe my life was saved by a peer that worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs and since that time I have wanted to be that person for someone else. I believe that sharing similar life experiences helps relate individuals on a level that cannot be achieved in a clinical setting. Working in recovery and helping others gives me sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Being a peer keeps me living a life of wellness.

As always, Tim did an excellent job facilitating the meeting. He listened carefully and compassionately, provided valuable feedback, and allowed attendees to speak openly about suicidal ideation, a topic that is too often swept under the rug, glossed over, or ignored.

Tim is great at facilitating groups. He keeps it real with authentic and good content feedback and shares --- he's integrated the qualities and skills of peer support so its natural and substantive. Today what he said about yoga really struck me -- I've heard him mention it before but somehow today I was receptive or the context or ? - but it resonated - We were talking about ways to overcome isolation - and he said yoga was a good place because people there are likely not going to be judgmental or body shaming etc... I have had thoughts about going to yoga -- but I assumed it to be a threatening environment.. Even having to go barefoot for me seems like a deal-breaker... but maybe there are ways to handle that. So I learned that I carry some big bias from somewhere about yoga, or just generally doing something with the body in public -- a rock hardened closure I've constructed. I used to play tennis a lot but then had a hand injury that makes it hard for me to hold the racquet and to hit balls.. But it would be sooo good for me to stretch, and the yoga of course is so beneficial. My sister in law walks alot and earlier today - before the meeting, I asked her if sometime we could walk together. She said yes of course, gladly. So two little kinds of breakthroughs today. And Im not going to overanalyse them worry about them - I;ll try to just let em ride and go with the growth. I think the walks will happen before any yoga.. but the realization about the yoga was a powerfufl -- and good -- shaake up I had today. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
