DetailsAbout Ahmad
I'm an African American, non-binary person living in Northern Colorado with my partner of 7 years and our 8 pets (and probably counting). I love interacting with others as well as balancing that with my personal self-care time. My self-care generally consists of gardening, creative writing, and doing anything related to Pokémon. Humor and music are big parts of my life and have helped me get through a lot. I play 6 instruments and I love to cook. Feel free to ask me more about myself!
My Recovery Story
I've struggled with significant mental health struggles throughout my life. Some of my struggles developed over time as a result of abuse and lack of attention to those struggles. They became more significant when I began experiencing chronic migraines in my early adult years. The physical pain as well as the mental struggles I was going through helped me justify the use of psychadelics as an escape, which became a severe problem shortly after starting. After feeling helpless, hopeless, and not in control of my life for so long, I began seeing doctors to help me manage my chronic migraines as well as seeing a therapist for my substance abuse and mental health struggles. My journey towards sobriety, I will admit, was easier than most due to the strength that my support system had for me at the time and the push they gave me to take control of my own life. After being a year and a half sober and being intentional with the work I was doing with my therapist and peer coach, I became a peer support specialist for a community mental health center. The intentional work I did with my therapist and coach helped tremendously because it helped me recognize the tools and lived experience I have that could be important to the recovery journey of another. The tools I developed and use assist me in regulating myself when certain presenting symptoms manifest, engaging in frequent activities and exercises that help me better myself, and the importance communication is to the people in my life have helped me in maintaining the life I want to live.
My Motivation To Help
I've had a strong desire to work in the mental health and substance abuse field from my late teens-early twenties where I had the experience of meeting a child who was mentally and emotionally hurting. It helped me to build the desire to help those who are experiencing/reliving trauma and are being misunderstood. Over the years, I found that I can do more to help as a Peer Specialis/Coach because there is so much more that can be gained from the addition of someone who can attest to having similar experiences in the care team of those who are experiencing mental heath or substance abuse struggles. My desire to help people feel less alone and to help others live the lives they see themselves living is what motivates me to help from a Peer Support position.
